For Lieutenant Colonel Luke Medvegy, service has always been an essential part of life. Growing up in Connecticut and enjoying a distinguished 23-year tenure in the U.S. Army, Luke devoted himself to safeguarding freedom and embodying integrity. Together with his wife, Katie, and their family, he bore the quiet scars of military service — experiences that fostered resilience and compassion.

The concept for American Heroes Equine Connection, Incorporated took shape as Luke transitioned from active duty. He and Katie frequently discussed the challenges veterans encounter, particularly the quest for purpose and healing in civilian life.

During his time in Kansas, while teaching at the United States Command and General Staff College, Luke encountered various methods of veteran care. A significant moment was his introduction to equine therapy, which revealed the powerful bond between humans and horses as a means of promoting emotional and mental well-being.

After moving to rural Indiana, the Medvegy family personally experienced the therapeutic benefits of horses while visiting local stables. These insights inspired Luke and Katie to establish American Heroes Equine Connection, offering veterans equine-assisted programs aimed at fostering healing and connection.

A career of global service

Luke's global assignments and accomplishments include serving as a diplomat in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and working throughout the Middle East, Southwest Asia, Europe, and Africa. His leadership in high-pressure situations has shaped the nonprofit's mission, focusing on resilience, teamwork, and innovation.

A family-oriented vision

Katie's journey as a military spouse, managing relocations and sacrifices, brought a family-oriented vision to the organization. Together, they designed the nonprofit to support not only veterans but also their families, utilizing equine connection to help them reconnect with purpose and inner strength.

Expanding the mission

Since its inception, the nonprofit's mission has broadened to include first responders, acknowledging their shared struggles in service. Luke also dedicates time each week to mentor veterans and students through two additional nonprofits and offers guidance to the local Fire Department on leadership and communication.
